The school year is winding down and some parents who have to work are busy looking for places their children can go while they work.
"The school does a really good job of sending home information about what is available this summer," says Bree Nelson.
Bree Nelson has a daughter in Johnson City Schools, and she says she's lucky. "I'm very fortunate to have family this summer that can spend time [with my children] while I'm at work," she said.
So many more parents are forced to search for an outside alternative.
We found out there are several different camps in Johnson City alone for children of all ages. "We have from art to nature to an adventure camp for 13- to 16-year-olds, and we have just the basic stay-and-play camp for 6- to 12-year-olds," adds Johnson City recreation manager Robin Dimona.
Dimona says their seven-week camp starts June 9. It costs $120 for the entire program, and the cost includes breakfast and lunch. "We take 70 kids. We divide them up into three groups, age appropriate, and they stay with their counselors" she explained.
Dimona says they also have several half day sports camps where students will learn the basics of the sport they choose. They also offer several nature camps.
Across town at the Boys & Girls Club in Johnson City, they are also getting ready for camp. Their theme is the Olympics. "Nutrition of the Olympics, to behind-the-scenes, how you become an Olympian, and the road to get to Olympic success," adds program director Heather Logan.
Logan says their nine-week camp starts June 1. It cost $35 per week. "We provide a breakfast, a lunch, and a late afternoon snack," Logan said. "We also have field trips."
Logan says they have different programs the kids can get involved in. "An art program which encompasses not just drawing in art, but also music and photography," she said.
We found out both program take weekly field trips to local places like Bays Mountain, which is something mother Bree Nelson likes. "I think that they use a lot of what's going on in the community," she said.
