Woman attempts to crochet world's longest scarf

ABINGDON, Va. -

Have you ever thought that you were good enough at something, or determined enough, to break a world record?

Whether it's being the fastest, the smallest, or maybe even crocheting the longest scarf; that's what a Virginia Highlands Community College student has in mind as she sets out to do just that.

Call it a crocheting project gone wild. Barbara Doane began making a camouflage scarf a while back. It kept going, and going, and going; finally she wondered what the record was for the longest scarf ever created. "I've looked at some stuff on Google. I'm trying to make sure that there's not another one longer. It was 3,285 feet roughly, that's the longest one I've found so far done by a single person," Barbara said.

So she decided she could do better. But we found out that long 3,200-foot scarf actually took four years to complete, so at 23 her project may take a little time. "I've actually done 15 feet in a day. I've actually been doing this since I was nine and I decided to go to the extreme," she says.

Extreme, yes, but with a purpose -- noted with the camouflage color of her scarf. "A lot of family members of mine are in the military it's kind of a way to say thanks," she said.

So as long as the yarn is available she'll just keep going and going. "I could actually keep going just to see how long I can get it. Make it until I completely run out of yarn or Walmart quits selling it to me. I just know that I've bought out Walmart in Bristol at Exit 7 like five times already," she says.

A rough estimate finds that the scarf is just over 50 feet with a long way to setting the record, but she's not discouraged. "Even if I don't actually have the right stuff going on ,then I'm going to keep going anyway. I've actually started, why not finish?" she asked.

Which begs the question: how will she know when she's finished?
