WATAUGA COUNTY, N.C. -

Watauga County, North Carolina authorities have identified the suspect they say shot and killed a deputy as 33-year-old Mitchell Allen Trivette.

Deputy William Mast Jr., the officer who was shot, was just 23 years old.

We've learned that he and another deputy responded to a call around one Thursday morning. Within minutes of their arrival Trivette opened fire, wounding Deputy Mast.

The other deputy shot back and injured Trivette.

Watauga County authorities say both Deputy Mast and Trivette were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
