The Washington County, Virginia Board of Supervisors is facing legal action after approving a permit to build a truck stop near an elementary school.
Attorney Mary Lynn Tate explained two landowners near the site are filing the complaint and asking for an injunction that would not allow a Love's Travel Stop off Exit 24 on Interstate 81. The complaint alleges the permit was granted without proper environmental studies, and a truck stop could mean fuel emissions too close to school children.
"The safety risks are almost as huge as health risks. Children in the road, heavy traffic, congestion around this interchange [are potential problems.] I don't know if you heard the discussions, but the interchange is simply too small," said Tate.
The complaint also states the permit to allow the truck stop counters the county's comprehensive plan to preserve the rural and agricultural nature of Washington County.
