Warm weather to bring business boom to Damascus
It'll be a warm start to December, and for one local town that's like Christmas coming early.
A few last minute adjustments and Krissy and Wes Mullins were ready to make their first trip down the Creeper Trail.
From Roanoke to Damascus, this couple came for a weekend getaway, saying it was too tempting to pass up.
"It's not very often almost in December that you have 60 degree weather, so we thought we might make the most of it," Krissy Mullins told News 5.
Bill Leonard, owner of Adventure Damascus bike shop told us, he expects a lot more last minute riders as the mercury rises over the weekend.
"What we've noticed in the past is all you have to do is have a little bit of warm weather and some sunshine, and people will show up," said Leonard.
When temperatures could just as easily dip below freezing, Leonard said weather like this can drive business up 60 percent, and it helps them get by during this slower season.
"That's everything. Outdoor business is tough anyway [in] that you've got rain, sleet, and snow, and it really gets hard," Leonard added.
Even off the trail, a big weekend is expected. The Lazy Fox Inn, a local bed and breakfast is already taking in customers.
"I only have one room left for this weekend, cause it's pretty weather, and you know Dave Dierks is saying it’s going to be pretty so, they'll be here," said the Lazy Fox Inn's owner, Ginny Adams.
That's helping a town, much at the mercy of Mother Nature, see a little more green.
If you plan to ride the creeper trail over the weekend, keep in mind you may want to dress in layers. We learned the top of White Top Mountain where the trail starts; it can be five to ten degrees cooler than at the base of the mountain.
