The Virginia board of elections is looking into the source and motive of mass emails trying to get voters to re-register. At this point the motive isn't clear but the information is clearly wrong.
“The email says if you haven't voted since 2008 then you need to re-register for this election,” Washington County Virginia Registrar Mary Ann Compton said. “That’s absolutely not true."
The facts are, if you have changed your address or name since the last election you will need to update that information.
The good news about that is you still have plenty of time. "The deadline to register to vote this year is October 15,” Compton added. “That includes changing your name or address or any kind of change that needs to be made."
Although these types of things can happen during any election, officials say they are more common during presidential elections, especially contentious ones. You may want to keep your eyes open for more of this kind of thing this year.
"It's par for the course and it may even be worse this year,” Compton concluded. “The advice I can give is, if it doesn't feel right then don't respond to it."
