We've collected a list of events in the area celebrating Veterans' Day this weekend and upcoming Monday.
Friday, November 9
ETSU in Johnson City will celebrate Veterans Day at the Veterans Memorial in front of Memorial Hall/Brooks Gymnasium. The event will begin at 9 a.m. with Col. Kyle Redman speaking.
The Veterans Affairs Medical Center Mountain Home in Johnson City will have an event beginning at 1 p.m. in Building 200, Room A061. Col. John McCue will be speaking.
Science Hill High School in Johnson City will be holding a ceremony at 9 a.m. The event will include a groundbreaking for the new Alumni Memorial Circle.
Elizabethton and Carter County Veterans Council will hold its ceremony at Cloudland High School at 9 a.m.
Saturday, November 10
Southwest Virginia Community College invites veterans to its annual Celebration of Veterans Breakfast on November 10. The meal begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Gene T. Dye Armory on the SWCC campus.
The Vietnam Veterans of American Chapter 979 will hold a ceremony at East Lawn Cemetery in Kingsport at 11 a.m.
Big Stone Gap has put up a Veterans Tree in town hall ahead of the planned Nov. 10 Veterans Parade. Veterans and their families are encouraged to stop by and add their names to the tree. The parade at begins at Bullitt Park at noon and moves down Wood Avenue, ending at Food City. Terry Kilgore, Bill Carrico will be among the speakers.
Bristol, Virginia's annual Veterans Day Parade will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. Lineup starts on Bob Morrison Boulevard at 8 a.m. The city’s traditional Veterans Day ceremony will be held after the parade. Local Bobby Griffin will be the guest speaker.
Sunday, November 11
The Johnson City/Washington County Veterans memorial will host an event at 1:30 p.m. Congressman Phil Roe will speak at the event. This is the one-year anniversary of the memorial.
Unicoi County will hold an event at the Veterans Memorial Park in Erwin at 2 p.m. Rusty Crowe will speak.
Abingdon, VA will hold an event at 2 p.m. commemorating the Cold War at the Veterans Memorial Park.
Jonesborough will host its annual Veterans day program at 2:30 p.m. in the Visitors Center. Retired CIA interrogator Sgt. Joe Kelly will speak.
Monday, November 12
The Sullivan County Sheriff's Office will be closed in observance of Veterans Day.
Valley Forge Elementary School in Carter County will host an event at 9 a.m. There will be a tribute to all branches of the service, a human tunnel of thanks, SSGT Jason Hollis speaking and a giant flag of students' handprints.
The Dobyns-Bennett High School Air Force JROTC will host a celebration at 9:30 a.m. in the Buck Van Huss dome.
The Vietnam Veterans of American Chapter 979 will hold a ceremony at the Kingsport Veterans Memorial at 11 a.m.
Johnson County will hold a Veterans Day Celebration at 11 a.m. on Monday. The event will be at Heritage Hall on North Church Street in Mountain City.
King College will honor veterans with a ceremony at 1:25 p.m. Flags will be placed on the oval honoring those who served. There will be a presentation of colors, Taps and a message from Lt. Col. Frank Listner. A new flagpole will also be unveiled for the E.W. King Building.
Northeast State Community College will commemorate the holiday with an event at 1:30 p.m. Retired Navy Commander M.S. Wishon will speak.
There will be a celebration in Grogan Park in Gate City, VA at 4 p.m. News 5 anchor Rebecca Pepin will speak. Bring a lawn chair. An outdoor worship service will follow for those who wish to attend.
