A 29-year veteran, with the Virginia Department of Transportation, was killed while on the job in Buchanan County, Virginia.

According to Virginia State Police Sgt. Michael Conroy, 47-year-old Carlos Ellis Keen of Oakwood, Virginia was driving a backhoe on Route 460 near Garden Creek.

Sgt. Conroy says around 2:30 Tuesday afternoon a tractor-trailer hauling gravel rear-ended the backhoe.

Keen was taken to Clinch Valley Medical Center, where he later died.

The driver of the tractor trailer, 25-year-old Trevor Cole of Whitewood, Va., told police there was a car that prevented him from getting over, which is why his truck hit the backhoe.

The crash remains under investigation.
