USS Carr to be decommissioned in Virginia

NORFOLK, Va. -

The Navy is set to decommission the guided-missile frigate USS Carr amid an uncertain future of delayed ship deployments and ship maintenance.

The event is scheduled for Wednesday at Naval Station Norfolk.

The USS Carr left on its final deployment in June in support of a multi-nation effort to target drug trafficking.

The ship was commissioned in 1985. It was originally home-ported in South Carolina, but was moved to Norfolk in 1995.

The Navy has said its part of $85 billion in automatic federal spending cuts that took effect earlier this month would delay the maintenance of 11 of its ships, that deployments such as those the Carr participated in would be decreased and that those that are sent out could spend longer stints at sea.
