USS Carr decommissioned in Virginia

The Navy has decommissioned the guided-missile frigate USS Carr after nearly three decades of service.

A ceremony Wednesday at Naval Station Norfolk marked the end of the Carr's service.

The Carr left on its final deployment in June in support of a multi-nation effort to target drug trafficking.

It was commissioned in 1985. The Carr originally was homeported in South Carolina, but moved to Norfolk in 1995.

The decommissioning comes amid uncertain times for the Navy as it delays ship deployments and maintenance to deal with major federal budget cuts that took effect earlier this month.

The Navy has said it would delay the maintenance of 11 ships, that deployments such as those the Carr participated in would be decreased and that those that are deployed could stay out longer.
