Sullivan County School Board holds rezoning meeting
It was standing room only Thursday night at a county rezoning meeting held at Sullivan Central High School.
The meeting concerned the south and central zones, and the county is considering transferring some students to other schools. There are three scenarios they are considering. Parents and students we spoke to explained their concerns about the plans.
Parent Robin Ketron says, "it would be a further travel for them, gas, that's all expenses, maintenance on the buses."
While student Logan Shaffer says, "At [Sullivan] North, we have an ROTC program. I've put in four years of my life that I'll never get back and all these scholarships and stuff that I'm up for, all those are going to go away if we get rezoned to Central."
"I don't think the answer is to overcrowd some schools by closing other schools. I think that would affect the success that we've had with our students," says Colonial Heights teacher Stephanie Miller.
There will be another meeting March 14 for formal presentation, and the vote on rezoning will be March 28.
Here's a list of the scenarios:
Scenario One-South Zone:
-Sullivan South High School will serve grades 7-12
-South zone elementary schools will serve grades PK-6
-Close Colonial Heights Middle School & Sullivan Middle School
Scenario Two-Central Zone:
-Blountville Elementary School expands to include Central Heights students.
-Close Central Heights Elementary
-Transfer Blountville Middle School students to Holston Middle School
-Close the Rock Building and remove modular classrooms at Blountville
Scenario Three-Consolidate High Schools In Kingsport Area:
-Sullivan South or Sullivan North will be designated a west zone high school serving students in grades 9-12, and the other school will be the west zone middle school serving grades 6-8.
-Colonial Heights and Sullivan Middle School will be closed
-North Middle will be expanded or students transferred
