Students compete for scholarships

EMORY, Va. -

It wasn't quite American Idol, but students at a local college were competing for the chance to receive a scholarship.

It was Spring Scholarship Day at Emory and Henry College. About 80 students from across the country were competing for scholarships in art, music, theater, pre-health, even church leadership.

So why compete for scholarship money? We've learned it gives the college a better sense on how to craft the student's talents.

"It's very personalized, it prepares them to talk about themselves, but in a context with other students so we can see where they will improve as a student," said David Hawsey, VP for Enrollment and Management.

Competing for scholarships is invitation only and we've learned students need to prepare a portfolio, along with their work.
