Stretching your gas money, as prices continue to soar
Chances are you've been shopping around when it comes to the price of gas. News 5 checked with automotive experts to learn more about what you can do to stretch your gas money.
The price at the pump seems to keep going up. "I wish the gas stations would have a gas war," said driver Donna Lindsey.
But the pain of filling your gas tank is far from over. "I looked at my daughter and said 'Gas $3.58 a gallon?' They just keep going up and it doesn't look like there's any relief in sight," added Lindsey.
But there are ways to make every penny count. At Auto-Zone in Bristol, Tennessee customers have been coming in with one question. "When it goes up everyone wants to know what they can do to save on that fuel mileage," said Steven Proffitt with Auto-Zone.
Proffitt says there are a couple of fixes that can make your car more fuel efficient, "Making sure you have correct tire pressure. Too much can give a drag on the car, and too little can give a drag on the car. Which is going to cause it to burn more fuel."
When is the last time you changed your air-filter? News 5 learned a clean filter means your car won't guzzle as much gas. "If it gets dirty, it's more or less choking the engine down which is causing it to use more fuel. Right along with the fuel filter, if it gets dirty then it's not getting the correct amount of fuel which is going to make it burn more fuel," added Proffitt.
But there are things you can do on the road, like going easy on the gas and brake pedals, carrying less in your car, and slowing down. In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Energy every 5-mph you drive over 60-mph is like paying another 24-cents a gallon.
Drivers like Paula Free say stretching gas money is as simple as making less trips. "I had to go pick up some milk, so I'm here at Food City picking up some gas, might as well do that," she said.
On average drivers in Tennessee are paying about $3.63 for a gallon of regular gas. In Virginia, it's about $3.68, that's according to AAA.
