JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. -

The founder of the International Storytelling Center and the National Storytelling Festival is retiring.

After almost 40 years of service, Jimmy Neil Smith, who is currently the president emeritus, will step down at the end of the year.

The Jonesborough native and one-time mayor of the town has plans to help other communities launch storytelling programs, including one in Africa.

ISC's board will conduct a search for a new president and CEO in 2013.
