BRISTOL, Va. -

Virginia Democratic U.S. senate candidate Tim Kaine brought his economic approach to Bristol Friday morning.

The former governor talked with employees at the Williams company on Vance Street. Kaine also met with city leaders at Eatz for lunch.

He told news 5 that the future of coal needs to become more innovative. He points to Old Dominion's power plant in Virginia City that is using coal to meet tough new standards "What I try to tell coal operators is just saying 'we want to do the way we use to,' that just doesn't work. That doesn't work in any industry. You've always got to do it new and be innovative," Kaine said.

Kaine is being opposed by former Republican governor and U.S. senator George Allen.
