Many children are only fed while they are at school. But during the summer months, some of these children will be forgotten.
Second Harvest Food Bank provides children with free, healthy meals when school is not in session.
Second Harvest Food Bank Director, Rhonda Chafin said, "At Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee it is our vision that no child goes hungry. The Food Bank's Summer Food Service Program helps make sure that no child will miss meals or go without proper nutrition this summer."
The food bank has expanded their involvement with the Summer Food Service Program to include 23 summer feeding sites around the Northeast Tennessee region.
They were funded through a $50,000 grant from Feeding America.
With the Lunch Express the food bank has been able to add 15 mobile delivery sites and more than double the number of children being served.
The program have served an average of 1,600 children each week since May 21.
