BRISTOL, Tenn. -

Runny nose, watery eyes and itching throat could be just a few of the things you might be dealing with this season and Doctor Ashley Austin told me there's a good reason for it, "Right now there's a lot of things out there, a lot of weeds are blooming, people are cutting hay. There's just a lot out in the environment right now that can trigger those allergies."

I learned this could cause sinus drainage and weaken your immune system.

"When that drainage sticks around and it is not appropriately treated, that can set you up for a secondary bacterial infection," said Austin.

Which can turn it into bronchitis or even a respiratory infection.

News 5 learned one of the best ways to clean out your sinuses is by using a sinus irrigation system. However, one thing you might want to think about is only using the saline that comes with the product. If you do make your own, you are at a higher risk for worsened congestion.

We learned this is because the solution has to have the appropriate amount of salt in the water to work.

News 5 discovered with all of the illnesses going around, so far, the flu is not one of them.

"We're seeing a lot of pneumonia and respiratory infections from dispensing antibiotics," said Cleve Anderson, Owner of Anderson Compound Pharmacy.

I learned from Austin that you might want to take a few precautionary steps to prevent getting sick, things like washing your hands and even taking vitamin-c to build up your immune system.

Health Departments in our area are currently giving out flu shots, which is another way to protect you from getting sick later in the season.
