Southwest Virginia could soon become a hub of educational opportunities for the Republic of Rwanda.
Rwandan Ambassador to the United States, James Kimonyo, visited the University of Virginia at Wise and Mountain Empire Community College Monday. He signed a letter of intent to explore becoming part of a program called NASA DEVELOP Wise.
The program would create opportunities for Rwandan students to learn science and technology skills in southwest Virginia.
Ambassador Kimonyo said the potential of the program is exciting for what it can do for his country. "Rwanda is a country just emerged from conflict and genocide, and so we're focusing on key academic programs that will transform our country; education being one of the top priorities for our country," said the ambassador.
Ambassador Kimonyo went on to tell us he hopes this is just the beginning of a future partnership. He hopes Rwandan students can later learn business skills here.
