New federal nutrition guidelines for school lunches have one local congressman concerned.
We were able to meet up with Congressman Phil Roe Monday while he was speaking to the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce. He told News 5 it's the cap on calorie counts that worries him.
Roe said one east Tennessee school director told him his lunchroom staff has to count out specific numbers of food items, and it's not enough for many kids. "Kids are out playing football. Girls are playing tennis and running track. A lot of kids are growing at that age, and what the school director told me, he said, 'The worst part is that some of the kids I send home on Friday, that this is the last good meal they're going to get the entire weekend,'" Roe said.
Roe said legislation against calorie counts are already in the works.
