Quilt block party celebrates handmade heritage
Abingdon is having a three-day block party, to show off and celebrate some down-home works of art.
Quilts will be on display all over town to not only give folks a chance to see them, but a chance for people to visit local businesses too.
The only hard part was figuring out which quilts will go where. The ladies at the Holston Mountain Artisans annex have the arduous task of sorting through and finding places for more than 100 handmade quilts.
They've been submitted for Abingdon's first quilt block party. The call went out and venues all over town wanted to participate. "All over town from one end to the other. From exit 13 to exit 19. [We saw] 34 venues and well over a hundred quilts," Donna Price with the group explained.
So the task at hand is to find the right quilt or quilts to go on display at each location. "The first thing we have to look at is the size that's available inside the venue and then we're going to squeeze as many quilts and wall hangings as we can into each space," she said.
Each quilt has a story attached, told by its owner or maker.
The sheer number of quilts surprised organizers. "We're very surprised at the participation that we got but we're very, very, pleased. We have quilts from pre-Civil War era to modern day art quilts to framed quilts and everything in between," she added.
It's also a great way to introduce people to not only the art of quilting but to all of the businesses involved. "This is great for our businesses because not only do people get a chance to see these gorgeous quilts, antiques, contemporary works, but they may have a chance to visit a restaurant or retailer where they've never been before," says Susan Howard with Abingdon Main Street.
The quilts will be on display all week all over town for the party. Plus, if it's related to quilts or quilting there are demonstrations going on too. So before you put away that winter quilt, stop a moment to listen to the story it has to tell.
