JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -

It will be here before you know it -- the deadline for property taxes in Johnson City is fast-approaching.

Homeowners have until December 31 to pay their property taxes.

Johnson City leaders say there are two ways people can avoid long lines: mail your check or pay online.

But there's a word of warning from city leaders -- if you miss the deadline, you'll wind up paying more. "There's a penalty and interest if your taxes are late. So it's important to the city also that we get our tax revenue for the city to keep police, fire, and parks and rec going," said Bob Wilson, assistant city manager.

Mailed checks must be post-marked on December 31 to not be considered late.
