American Electric Power is working to lower the number of outages when bad weather strikes.

AEP is stepping up its efforts to trim and cut down trees that interfere with the company's distribution lines.

Our news crew caught up with a work crew in Kingsport that was clearing debris around power lines along Highway 11W.

Officials told us trees are the primary cause of most power outages. "We spend as much money trimming trees in Kingsport as we do with any other maintenance activity. It's a big chunk of our budget. It's something we have to do," said Isaac Webb with American Electric Power.

Kingsport alone has thousands of miles of distribution lines that have to be maintained throughout the year.
