Thursday marks one year since a damaging earthquake hit central Virginia.

The 5.8 magnitude quake was felt in every state on the eastern coast of the United States.

It caused an estimated total of $200 to $300 million in damages. In fact, the Washington Monument is still closed; repairs are expected to resume until about 2014.

There will be a news conference at the Washington Monument Thursday to talk about the lingering effects, progress made, and recovery efforts.

Emergency officials will also talk about how they're preparing for a future similar event. That meeting will take place at 10:30 Thursday morning.
