One person is dead after a train collided with a tractor trailer Wednesday afternoon.
"I was inside cooking dinner and I heard a God awful boom. It shook the house," said Randy Cox, who lives just feet from the railroad tracks.
Emergency responders in Glade Spring, Virginia said the crash involved a Norfolk Southern train and a flatbed-type tractor trailer. The two collided close to a railroad crossing near the town square around 4:45 p.m.
"I looked outside, there was fire all over the place, smoke," Cox said. "It was pretty bad."
Deputy Director of Washington County, Virginia Emergency Management, Theresa Kingsley, said 300 to 400 gallons of fuel spilled onto the tracks. "We had a fuel product that did spill and ignite from what appears to be the saddle bags of the semi," she said.
The person inside the truck, who is not yet being identified, died.
Emergency crews were prepared to spend several hours clearing the debris and inspecting the train before moving it to clear the railroad crossings in the surrounding area. "The train contractors were making sure there was no damage to the train and its safe to operate," Kingsley said.
The crash is still under investigation.
