One dead after railroad accident
Investigation underway in Lee County, Va.
By Virginia State Police say one person is dead after a train accident in Lee County, Virginia.
We learned the incident happened just after midnight Monday at Turner Siding in Lee County, that's on railroad property.
According to troopers a CSX rail car derailed, overturned, and landed on a railroad transport taxi.
One person in the transport taxi was killed.
No names have been released.
The state police say the accident remains under investigation by both CSX and Norfolk southern.
VSP released the following statement about the incident Monday afternoon:
"VIRGINIA STATE POLICE INVESTIGATE DEATH FROM TRAIN DERAILMENT IN LEE COUNTY
ST. CHARLES, Va. – Virginia State Police are investigating a death that resulted overnight from a train derailment in Lee County.
At approximately 11:45 p.m. Sunday (Dec. 9), a CSX train car loaded with coal derailed at Turner Siding near the intersection of Routes 635 and 636 in St. Charles. Virginia State Police Trooper M.C. Munsey responded to the scene and is investigating the death and injury that resulted from the derailment.
A 2003 Ford Windstar was parked in a gravel lot adjacent to the train tracks. The minivan is owned by J&K Transportation and use as a “transport taxi” to shuttle railroad employees back and forth to the train destinations.
When the railcar derailed, part of it overturned onto the Windstar. The driver of the Windstar, Jamie Collins, 31, of Baxter, Ky., was transported to Lee Regional Medical Center, where he died later Monday morning (Dec. 10).
The passenger in the Windstar, Jason H. Williams, 33, of Viper, Ky., was flown to Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn., for treatment of serious injuries.
The investigation into the incident remains ongoing."
