Earth Day is April 22nd. Below is a list of events sponsored by Appalachian Sustainable Development:

Abingdon Earth Day, April 26:  Water Starts planting; Learning Landscapes and The Panicello Memorial Trail   Activity underwritten by Blue Ridge Beverage Company

When:  9am to 1pm
Where:  Fields-Penn House, Abingdon, VA

This event is designed to coordinate with this year’s ‘water’ theme at Abingdon’s Earth Day celebration.  ASD staff and volunteers will teach participants a variety of things including how to propagate new plants by placing them in water.  They will also have a selection of plants to choose from that encourage native pollinators such as hummingbirds, bees and butterflies to visit home gardens.  Instructions will be provided to help care for new plants while the roots are forming and what to do when it’s time to move the young plants into the home garden or container.  This activity is offered as part of ASD’s Learning Landscapes and Panicello Memorial Trail program.  Slated to open later in 2014, the Panicello Memorial Trail is an outdoor educational trail that features stations of learning and connects two schools, the recreation center and Abingdon town sidewalks.  Learning Landscapes is an outdoor garden classroom program designed to teach people about where food comes from and provide them with fresh, healthy food.

Spring Garden Fair, April 26: Agro-Forestry/fruit and nut trees with ASD’s Emily LachnietActivity underwritten by First TN Bank

When:  11am to 2pm
Where:  The Exchange Place, Kingsport, TN

Participants will go back in time when visiting this historic living history farm.  Young and old alike can tour eight original reconstructed buildings and observe four historic breeds of livestock in their natural setting.    Join Emily Lachniet of ASD for an informative workshop at 11am and learn about Agro-Forestry products, their benefits, values and availability in our region.  Participants will learn how to identify native plants and about native fruit and nut trees, all as local sources of food.  They will also learn how to care for fruit and nut trees and the growing opportunities for markets and well as the benefits of their use in landscaping.  Various varieties of trees will be available for sale and informational literature will be provided.  This activity is offered as part of ASD’s Agro-Forestry program which focuses on teaching people about native plants and native fruit and nut trees as sources of food and economic development from value added products.

An annual event, Earth Day (this year on April 22) was created to inspire awareness and an appreciation for the Earth’s environment.  Inspiring awareness and appreciation for the environment and identifying economic development opportunities for citizens is what ASD has been doing since 1995.  ASD believes that partnerships and education are keys to creating a thriving Appalachia.
