New state park coming soon

There is a state park within an hour's drive of just about anywhere in the state of Tennessee, and a new one is coming to Unicoi County.

Many gathered to celebrate the future of more than 2,000 acres in the Rocky Fork area, including the highest altitude of all Tennessee state parks.

Rocky Fork got its name after the cool waters that run down its center, and Governor Bill Haslam says the land can hold its own against the Great Smoky Mountains National Park near Sevierville.

"This really is one of those incredibly beautiful places with the water that’s there," said Haslam.

And with the park, comes visitors, which means more traffic in local communities.

"This is a place where many Americans can come enjoy the great American outdoors and have a good time and spend money," said U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander.

Governor Haslam added, "We've seen in other state parks that’s happened. People come to visit the park and the surrounding communities reap the benefits."

Rocky Fork will be an attraction for many, whether it is hiking, fishing, or just enjoying the outdoors.

This year marks the 75th anniversary for the Tennessee State Park system.
