New facts about the man accused of raping a six-month-old baby in Kingsport are alarming neighbors; this is also not the first time Shawn Lee Wray has been charged with sexually assaulting a child.
A copy of the court records from Montgomery County, Texas show Wray pled guilty to aggravated sexual assault of a 13-year-old child.
Wray was sentenced to spend five years in a Texas prison for that crime.
Shawn Lee Wray was arrested July 10, 2012 for aggravated child rape and aggravated child abuse.
"It's awful, it's terrible," said Debra Spivey, whose grandchildren lived near Wray.
"My children play every day out here on this street, riding their bike, playing with his kids,” said Spivey. “We did not know he was a registered sex offender."
News 5 WCYB checked with the Montgomery County, Texas district attorney and learned Wray spent five years in a Texas prison.
Court records show he pled guilty to sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl in 2006. He applied for parole in 2008 but was denied. Wray was released in 2010.
After being released, Kingsport Police say he moved to Tennessee, where he has family. Detectives say Wray was living in a Kingsport mobile home park but he was not registered as a sex offender.
Megan Bell says she had no idea about Wray's past when she let her daughter play outside. "It is nerve-racking that my child was out here,” says resident Megan Bell.
Wray has three pending charges for failing to register as a sex offender in Kingsport. He was first charged for failing to register in November 2011.
Police say the child Wray is accused of raping was taken to the hospital on Monday with severe injuries.
Shawn Lee Wray remains jailed on a $100,000 bond. He is set for a preliminary hearing July 17, 2012.
