Mountaintop removal coal mining will not be banned in Tennessee, at least not for now.
A bill proposing to stop the practice failed in a state senate committee today. The legislation would have banned any mining that alters ridge lines more than 2,000 feet above sea level. Supporters call the measure the "Scenic Vistas Protection Act."
Opponents worry the proposal is a first step toward ending Tennessee coal mining.
The bill's sponsor says he plans to try again next year.
