About 300 American Red Cross blood drives have been canceled because of Superstorm Sandy, which means our area needs to step up donations to help increase supplies.
The American Red Cross Mountain Empire Chapter said they also need more trained volunteers and financial contributions.
Officials estimate this storm could be even more expensive than Hurricane Katrina. "This could be financially devastating because of the region its hitting: New York City. It's effecting the stock market and the public transportation," said Patty Tauscher with the American Red Cross in Bristol, Virginia.
Some local volunteers from the Tri-Cities are heading to New York to help with recovery efforts. They're expected to be there for at least two weeks.
