WASHINGTON COUNTY, Va. -

Divers are searching South Holston Lake after a helicopter crash.

Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corrine Geller says the first 911 call came in just after 10:30 Friday night.

Crews were called out to the area near Lake Road and County Park Road.

According to VSP the Bell 407 helicopter crashed into the lake shortly after taking off from a nearby house.

The helicopter was owned by K-VA-T, the parent company of Food City.

Police tell us the aircraft was taking passengers from Bristol Motor Speedway to the home on the lake. The helicopter had just dropped off six passengers and taken off when the crash occurred.

We've learned the male pilot is an East Tennessee resident and was the only person on board at the time of the crash.

Virginia State Police Search & Recovery Team divers worked Friday and Saturday searching the wreckage for the pilot.

They're also using a side-scan sonar to search for the pilot.

Police say the helicopter broke apart on impact with the water, with the bulk of the aircraft still submerged in the water.

The name of the pilot is not being released at this time.
