Man arrested at fire command post after officers ask him to leave

HAWKINS COUNTY, Tenn. -

Things got heated outside of a forest fire command post in Hawkins County Wednesday.

We've learned after the sheriff's department asked a man to leave, officers say he refused and placed his hand on a rifle.

The Hawkins County Sheriff's Department arrested Michael Campbell. He's facing aggravated assault and disorderly conduct charges.

Emergency Management officials say Sunday night, Campbell visited their command post during a briefing.

Director Gary Murrell says things escalated when Campbell was asked to leave, "Constable Meyers asked him [Campbell] to exit his vehicle and show him some identification. He [Campbell] refused to and at some time during that discussion he reached for a gun that was laying in the passenger seat of the car."

Emergency Management officials say they initially thought Campbell was a volunteer firefighter taking pictures of the forest fire.
