Local schools celebrate Read Across America Day
Students across the country were dressed in their best "Cat in the Hat" gear Friday. That's because they were celebrating Read Across America Day, honoring beloved children's author Dr. Seuss' birthday.
We stopped in a kindergarten classroom at Abingdon Elementary, there students were listening to "Green Eggs and Ham."
It wasn't hard to find the famed red and white striped hat. The school's principal says this annual event is a great way to reach more readers.
"You could see the excitement when they're reading the books and there's nothing really that you can do to increase student achievement more then to have reading, strong reading," said Principal Megan Denobriga.
Our own Preston Ayres read to students at Boone's Creek Elementary Friday. Over the in Bristol, Virginia School System students also listened to Tarah Taylor and Julie Newman.
