Hampton High School prom dress sale benefits entire senior class
Prom is a magical night for many high school students and for young women, the best part about prom is the dress. But a local high school is stepping up to make dress shopping a more affordable experience.
The halls of Hampton High School in Carter County had lot more glitz and glam Saturday. Shelia Chapman and her daughter Tiffany were on the hunt for her daughter's dream dress. But Chapman says it can be tough on her budget sending two daughters to formal dances this year, "It can be hundreds and hundreds of dollars if you don't shop around and get good prices first."
So to make prom an affordable experience for every family, the school has more than 70 donated dresses of every color, style, and size on sale for a fraction of the cost. "If you don't have to go and spend $300 on a prom dress, you can spend $75, you can take that money and put it towards something else," said student Amber Morton.
Organizer Amy Banner says this dress sale actually helps all students, "Any profits at all goes into the Senior Class Fund to make senior prom more affordable for everyone. The more money we raise, the cheaper the ticket prices become for all our students."
But no 'look' is complete without one-of-a-kind jewelry and accessories. Tiffany Chapman says she can't believe she got her prom dress for $40, "They [dresses] can be really expensive."
But a bargain can still make you feel like a million bucks. "I feel like a beautiful person," added Chapman.
We did a little more digging and you might be surprised to hear, just to go to prom the average family spends about $1,000 per teen. That's everything from a dress or tux, to tickets, even dinner according to a survey from Visa-Inc.
