A Virginia bill cracking down on distracted drivers has passed the General Assembly.
Once signed by Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell, there will be tougher penalties if you text behind the wheel.
Currently, if you text while driving, you could face a $20 fine, but police have to pull you over for another violation first since texting is a secondary offense.
With the passage of this legislation, the fine would increase to $250 and make it a primary offense.
If you get ticketed a second time for texting while driving, the fine goes up to $500.
We've also learned, if a driver is charged with reckless driving as a result of texting, there's also a mandatory minimum $500 fine.
