Forced out by the rain
Five families in Carter County have been told they cannot stay in their homes because of the heavy rain.
Emergency Management and the American Red Cross are there to help when things take a turn for the worse, and they were ready Tuesday night in Carter County.
Five homes were evacuated on Carl Smith Road in the Hampton Community.
Darla Rouse-Lindquist said, “I heard someone pounding on the door and they were telling me I had to leave."
Rouse-Lindquist headed for a shelter at Grace Baptist Church with the American Red Cross.
Emergency workers were prepared for this moment. Sheriff Chris Mathes says they have been monitoring water levels for a few days, “The water has gotten so heavy coming down the mountain it is actually eroded some of the large trees that have fallen causing some problems.”
Those problems turned into an evacuation.
“If it jumps a creek bank and it starts pushing it can get out of hand real quick and become very dangerous,” said Sheriff Mathes.
Mathes also said extra deputies are on duty Tuesday night to stay prepared for the worst.
