A local electric company is warning customers about a gift card scam.
The Greeneville Light and Power System said someone started e-mailing their customers and employees on Tuesday stating they have won a $1,000 Visa gift card.
The General Manager said the company is not giving out free money and warns customers not to give out their personal information.
“We don’t have anything to do with that. It’s absolutely a scam,” said Bill Carroll, GL&PS General Manager. “Anybody who gets it ought to delete it. People will find ways to separate you from your money if you let them.”
He said they’ve examined their e-mail system and firewall and there is no sign they’ve been hacked.
According to Carroll, the same type of scam started at Clarksville Electric on Wednesday.
