ETSU announced Thursday it's working on one of its largest fundraising goals in the school's history in order to build a performing arts center.
The school must raise $9.5 million during the next 16 months to go toward the $40 million building.
The state has promised initial funding and a three-to-one match next year, if the university can raise its share.
The plan is to locate the new facility next to the Millenium Center, which already offers a parking garage.
ETSU's president, Doctor Brian Noland, says, right now, the school has nowhere to celebrate the arts.
"The largest room on campus is the Culp Auditorium. It seats right at about 850 but it has a small stage. It's not conducive to theatre, it's not conducive to plays, it's not conducive to large performances."
We're told, so far, the campaign is off to a great start.
Donor James Martin made a gift of $3 million in memory of his late wife, Mary B. Martin, whose name is already on the university's School for the Arts.
