KINGSPORT, Tenn. -

K-9 units are an invaluable tool for law enforcement and faithfully do their part to take criminals off the streets each and every day.

Kingsport Police Department K-9s are now a little safer in the line of duty thanks to a donation by some local business owners.

Just like any other police officer, K-9s need equipment. The gear that was just donated will go a long way in keeping them safe while they work.

Handling officers do things nobody else can because of their K-9 counterparts. Make no mistake about it, the dogs are highly trained and very expensive.

Billy Boyd is the partner of Kingsport K-9 'Macho.' "I would say Macho has about $10,000 in him right now as far as the purchase of the dog and training."

Billy says his partner Macho is his backup in every situation and recent events involving the shooting of a K-9 in Lee County, Virginia have made K-9 handlers everywhere take the time to double-check safety measures.

"That's the most important thing is to take care of him because he is our backup," Boyd said. "It's important to keep the car door locked, and look out for him and the public's safety also."

The public donation from Natural Pet Supply of several safety vests, along with a padded bite suit, are a very welcomed addition to Kingsport's K-9 program.

"Donations are invaluable because of budget cutbacks and the way the economy is right now," explained Officer Tom Patton. "We just can't continue to offer the services we offer without help from the community like this.
