Thousands of people remain in the dark following Hurricane Sandy, especially in our area.

Appalachian Electric Power says it is working to restore power to the thousands who are going without. More than 7,000 people are still waiting for power to be restored.

Here's the latest look at outages, courtesy of AEP -- Buchanan and Dickenson Counties are at the top of the list for the number of people in the dark. Both counties have around 3,000 customers without power.

Wise County is hovering around 540 people without electricity, followed by Russell County with more than 400 and in Washington County, Virginia a little more a hundred people are waiting to have power restored.

AEP says significant damage occurred to its transmissions lines, leading to the vast number of outages.

As far as the rest of the state is concerned, Dominion Virginia Power says more than 15,000 of its customers are without power, mostly in northern Virginia.

The utility says it expects to have power restored to nearly all customers by Thursday night, except in sections where flooding or severe damaged occurred..
