BRISTOL, Tenn. -

Bristol, Tennessee police officer Mark Vance was killed back in 2004 after answering a domestic violence call.

In honor of Officer Vance, a memorial award is given annually to a law enforcement officer whose work is recognized as exceptional when dealing with domestic violence cases.

This year, nearly eight years after Vance's death, Matt Cousins is being recognized, after helping a victim of abuse get out of danger.

"When I was told I won the award I was actually surprised. I don't think I've done anything out of the ordinary to win this award, but I am honored," said Cousins.

Cousins says it may be an individual award, but it takes a whole team to combat domestic violence.
