A child has died and another has suffered serious burns in a Chattanooga house fire.

Fire department officials say two police officers, who were the first to arrive on the scene Monday morning, tried desperately to get the children out after being told that two babies were inside the burning home. The officers were repeatedly forced back because of the intense heat and thick smoke.

Firefighters in full protective gear battled their way into a house that was so hot that their thermal imaging cameras were of virtually no use.

The children's names and ages have yet to be released.

One was pronounced dead on the scene. Another has been flown to a burn treatment center in Georgia.

The mother was injured trying to get the children out.
