Busy day for trash pickup
Bags, paper, boxes, and bows make for wrapping the perfect Christmas gifts; but once those presents are opened, usually what's left is a mountain of trash.
"I did have some trash, lots of holiday catalogs," says Johnson City resident Kate Van Huss.
The day after Christmas is one of the busiest days for garbage pickup. Kathy Harsh with Johnson City Public Works told News 5 just how much they get. "Residential side its about 11 tons of additional trash. We typically pick up about 534 tons weekly," she said.
To make sure everything runs smoothly, they bring in extra employees. "An additional person on each residential truck to get out and get the extra that we have, because we do have the automated collection," says Harsh.
Harsh has advice to make sure the trash doesn't end up everywhere, before the trucks run. "Containerize it, that's the major thing and if they could put it into bags beside their container or use recycling because we recycle Christmas paper, any cardboard boxes, thing like that we do recycle," she said.
If you missed pickup or simply had too much trash, they've placed an additional dumpster outside their building located on New Street. "I knew that Christmas we wouldn't have trash pick-up so I didn't even think about it. I thought I'd missed it like maybe Monday or over the weekend or something," says Van Huss.
We've learned they did run an additional day over the weekend to make sure they didn't have as much garbage pile up.
