Having a presence on Facebook is just a fact of life for many people and businesses these days; when a business wants to increase Facebook traffic, sometimes they have a contest.
The Huddle House restaurant chain recently had a contest to find America's favorite Huddle House. Out of 397 restaurants, the Huddle House in Wise, Virginia was the winner.
You've got to be quick to stay out of the way behind the counter at the Huddle House in Wise. Food comes off the grill and on to the plates and out to the customers at an amazing rate. And it's not just breakfast; "any meal, any time of day" is their motto. It's perfect for customers on the move.
"We work for a bank and do a lot of traveling. Cause we have a branch up here it's convenient. Service is real good, food is just excellent," says customer Bill Turner.
It better be, because this Huddle House was recently voted America's favorite Huddle House out of all the Huddle House restaurants. Since November folks have been voting on Facebook to determine the winner. It used to be word of mouth that got the word out, but not any more. "Word of mouth has kind of changed to word of Facebook. Used to be they'd say, you make one person happy you're lucky if they tell one person. You make somebody mad and they're got to tell 10, it's the same concept," manager Vince Justice says.
So there are a lot of happy customers to make this America's favorite. The grand prize was a way to give back to their customers. "The top prize was for the whole contest was 500 free meals to be given away to the community that was America's favorite Huddle House," Justice said.
The tough conditions in the coalfields these days gave them an idea. "We donated 400 of those meals to Operation Coal Christmas, which had their banquet Saturday night over in Pound to go to coal miners and their families," he said.
Some of those same customers that had voted to make them their favorite were having hard times of their own. "We had 20 to 25 come in here Monday through Friday 2:30 to 3:00 when some of them were going to work some just getting off," Justice says.
Now only five show up, but the good fortune of this restaurant is being shared with those less fortunate. It is the season you know and maybe that's the reason they're America's favorite.
