Miller Crest Residents Still Can't Recover Property

Saturday marks one month since fire destroyed 20 apartments at the Miller Crest complex in Johnson City. As residents continue working to rebuild their lives, some are angry that they haven't been able to find out if any of their belongings can be salvaged.

Each day weather takes its toll on thebeleaguered Miller Crest Apartments, burned one month ago.

"I get a chain link fence and a view from a far, and that's it," said former resident Ida Webb. "And yes, I'm upset about it."

Anger is building because Ida Webb and other residents don't know if they have anything left. "Do I have a memory still locked up in there, do I have any jewelry, nobody will tell me anything," she said.

Both Webb and Scott Kerley say no one will give them answers and time is ticking.

Residents say a representative from the company who owns the complex, Brookside Properties, told them they could get their stuff last week, even told them they would get a 24-hour call in advance to find out the exact day, but it never happened.

A spokesperson from Brookside Properties in Chattanooga told us they're waiting on Travelers Insurance to hire a demolition crew to go in and get the belongings. Until then, they don't want any residents getting hurt.

But that's not settling well with Kerley.

"I have no dealings with their insurance company," he said. "My stuff isn't insured with them, they have no business with me, yet they have my property seized."

Brookside did admit to communication issues with some residents but say they're in the process of contacting everyone. Meanwhile, there's no date scheduled for a demolition crew to come in.

Brookside Properties says Travelers Insurance has not prohibited them from letting residents get back inside their apartments but they're keeping people out for safety reasons.
