Possible Meningitis Death Being Investigated

POSTED: 6:04 pm EDT September 2, 2010
The Sullivan County Health Department is investigating the sudden death of a four-year-old child.

The child died Monday at Holston Valley Hospital. Health leaders aren't sure about the cause and nothing has been ruled out, including meningitis.

As a precautionary measure, medical staff and family who had close contact with the child are being treated.

"There is no public health threat at this point in time," said Stephen May of the Sullivan County Health Department. "Those with the most intimate contact have already been treated and basically that was overkill because we've not even confirmed the diagnosis."

Dr. May says it could be weeks before they know an exact cause of death.
