KINGSPORT, Tenn. -

A child is recovering after Kingsport police say she was hit by a car while riding her bike Wednesday night.

Police tell News 5 it happened just before nine o'clock on West Sullivan Street near Hammond Avenue.

They say a Chevy Malibu was driving eastbound on Sullivan Street, approaching Hammond Avenue, when a 12-year-old girl riding a bike did not stop for the stop sign on Hammond and rode into the path of the car. The driver tried to avoid hitting the bike by braking and steering to the left, but the right front corner of the car hit her.

News 5 has learned the girl was taken to the hospital in stable but serious condition. Police say she was not wearing a helmet.

Police tell us the driver of the car will not be charged.

The investigation is ongoing.
