Paul “PJ” Johnson began his television career at WCYB-TV in 1981 after working as a newspaper and radio reporter.
After working for several television stations in the southeast, PJ returned home to the Tri-Cities as Sports Director in 1995.
An award-winning reporter, PJ is a member of the National Motorsports Press Association.
In 2005, he won the most prestigious media honor in NASCAR, the Russ Catlin Motorsports Journalism award.
In 2012, he won the Charlie Harville Award as National Motorsports Press Association Reporter of the Year.
His short story “The Dirt on Bristol Motor Speedway” was published by the popular Chicken Soup for the Soul series on NASCAR.
More recently, in 2014, he won the first place award for Best News Anchor from the Tennessee Associated Press Broadcaster and Newspaper Association.
One of the A.P. judges had this to say about PJ's entry: "Fantastic, conversational yet authoritative style. I could watch Paul for hours."
In August of 2007, PJ began anchoring the news on Fox Tri-Cities. In 2012, he joined News 5 WCYB at 5:30.
PJ is a graduate of East Tennessee State University. PJ’s daughter Morgan suffers from Type One Diabetes and he is very active in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
In his spare time, you can find PJ on the golf course or cruising with his dog, Moose.
