John Mayer's now known for playing charity concerts and dating Katy Perry, but it wasn't that long ago that he was ticking people off left and right.

In 2010, you couldn't turn around without hearing a new Mayer quotable about his ex-girlfriends Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson, or how he thinks his nether region is a lot like a white supremacist.

He's already apologized for those words, and, after health problems silenced him for a long while, Mayer is telling "CBS Sunday Morning" that he fully owns that past.

"I was just a jerk," Mayer says in the interview airing this weekend, noting that he's changed since his loose-lipped younger years.

Now 35, Mayer's learned the lesson we all figure out at one point: you can't always be liked.

"It's very liberating when you finally realize it's impossible," he said. "I wanted everybody to like me. I thought I was one shuck and jive away in every direction."

The full interview will air on "CBS Sunday Morning" February 10.
