Owner Of Local Suboxone Clinic Hopes To Work With Law Enforcement
POSTED: 4:26 pm EDT September 8, 2010UPDATED: 9:29 am EDT September 9, 2010KINGSPORT, Tenn -- A few weeks ago we told you why local authorities were concerned about Suboxone clinics. Undercover detectives say there is now a market for Suboxone on the street and some are blaming the clinics. This week we talked with the owner of one of those clinics to get his response to the concerns, and what his clinic does to try and prevent abuse.
Basically, Suboxone clinics use a different drug to treat the same addictions as methadone. But because of how the law is written it's much easier to open a suboxone clinic. Dr. Robin Peavler, Vice President of SelfRefind Clinics says suboxone clinics are key in fighting opiate addiction, but also says there are some clinics that are not as strict with patients as his are.
"We are working at our clinic and clinics to get it right. And by getting it right, meaning holding the patient accountable and working on weaning the patients off this medication," said Peavler.
Peavler says patients at SelfRefind are drug screened and are subject to pill counts several times a month. He hopes to work with both city leaders and local law enforcement to educate them about the program.
